Sasha Renée Pérez is a Democratic member of the California State Senate representing the 25th District, which spans more than twenty cities and communities across the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire, including Alhambra, Pasadena, Glendale, Arcadia, and Rancho Cucamonga. [1,2] A first-generation college graduate who earned dual degrees in Political Science and Economics from California State University, Los Angeles, [1,3] Pérez rose through the ranks of Alhambra city government, becoming the youngest and first Latina mayor of a mid-sized California city [4] before winning her Senate seat in 2024 at the age of thirty-one — making her the youngest current state senator. [1,6] With a 15% CFC Biblical Values Scorecard rating, Pérez's legislative record has consistently diverged from the California Family Council's core priorities. Her endorsements from Planned Parenthood and the LGBTQ Legislative Caucus, [1,4] her prior service as political director for Proposition 1 (which CFC opposed as a radical expansion of abortion access), [4] and her advocacy for government-driven social programs over parental empowerment place her at significant distance from CFC's framework on the sanctity of life, parental authority, and limited government — though her work combating childhood hunger and preventing sexual assault on school campuses reflects genuine concern for child welfare that CFC acknowledges.
Pérez was raised in the San Gabriel Valley communities of Glendora and Alhambra, where her family has lived for three generations. [2,4] She is the daughter of a union electrician and a Los Angeles County social worker, and the granddaughter of a sheetmetal worker and AFL-CIO organizer.
Pérez launched her professional career at the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs, teaching high school students about civic participation and the policymaking process. [2,4] She then joined the Campaign for College Opportunity, where she helped build coalitions that expanded Cal Grant access to nearly half a million students and led a statewide effort that secured ninety-seven million dollars in funding for college affordability.
Her 13.3% Biblical Values Scorecard rating across 30 scored floor votes reflects consistent divergence from CFC's worldview framework. Her voting record has supported abortion access expansion over the sanctity of human life, government-directed education over parental authority and school choice, and progressive social mandates over religious liberty protections.
In the 2024 primary for the open 25th Senate District seat, Pérez finished second in a five-candidate field with roughly thirty-three percent of the vote, advancing despite being outspent three-to-one. [1] She went on to defeat Republican Elizabeth Wong Ahlers in the November general election with nearly sixty percent of the vote. [1,6] Since taking office, she has chaired the Senate Education Committee and serves on the Budget, Environmental Quality, Human Services, and Public Safety committees.
