Assemblymember Jose Luis Solache, Jr. is a Democrat representing California's 62nd Assembly District, which encompasses the Gateway Cities and southeastern Los Angeles County communities of Bellflower, Huntington Park, Lakewood, Lynwood, Maywood, Paramount, South Gate, and Walnut Park. [1,2] A lifelong resident of the district who grew up in Lynwood as the son of Mexican immigrants, [3] Solache assumed office on December 2, 2024, succeeding former Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon. [1] With a 17% CFC Biblical Values Scorecard rating, his legislative record has generally diverged from the California Family Council's core priorities on parental rights, religious liberty, and the sanctity of life. However, his authorship of AB 562, the Placing Foster Youth with Families Act — which requires child welfare agencies to identify extended family members who can care for children removed from parental custody [10] — reflects a commitment to keeping children connected to their families that aligns with CFC's conviction that children have a fundamental right to be known and raised by family wherever possible.
Solache's path to Sacramento was built on more than two decades of local public service in the city of Lynwood. In 2003, at the age of 23, he won election to the Lynwood Unified School District Board of Education, becoming one of the youngest elected leaders in Los Angeles County at the time. [1,3] He served three terms on the school board, including three stints as board president, overseeing a district that educates more than 15,000 students. [3,7] In 2013, he was elected to the Lynwood City Council, where he served multiple terms as mayor and mayor pro tem.
Their 15.5% Biblical Values Scorecard rating across 29 scored floor votes reflects consistent divergence from CFC's worldview framework. Their voting record has supported abortion access expansion over the sanctity of human life, government-directed education over parental authority and school choice, and progressive social mandates over religious liberty protections.
His broader legislative agenda emphasizes fully funding public schools, reducing college tuition, expanding affordable housing, and increasing access to healthcare [5,6] — priorities that generally favor an expanded role for state government. CFC's framework, grounded in the principle of subsidiarity, holds that decisions should be made at the most local level possible and that government programs should strengthen rather than supplant family authority. On matters of parental rights in education, religious liberty, and the sanctity of life, Solache's voting record as part of the Democratic caucus has consistently diverged from CFC's positions. Solache is openly gay. [2]
