Patrick Ahrens is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly representing District 26, which encompasses the heart of Silicon Valley including Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Cupertino, and parts of San Jose [1,2]. A first-generation college graduate and Sunnyvale resident, Ahrens was sworn into office on December 2, 2024, after winning the seat vacated by Evan Low, for whom he had served as district director for a decade [1,3]. His personal journey from childhood adversity and homelessness to public service has shaped a legislative agenda focused on affordable housing, education equity, and economic opportunity for disadvantaged Californians [2,4]. With a 17% CFC Biblical Values Scorecard rating, Ahrens's voting record has consistently diverged from the California Family Council's worldview framework on the sanctity of life (Chapter 6), parental authority in education (Chapter 8), and religious liberty (Chapter 9).
Patrick Ahrens was born and raised in San Jose, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley. His early life was marked by significant hardship: he grew up in a household struggling with substance abuse and spent time in the foster care system [1,2]. As a young person, he and his twin brother Sean experienced homelessness, at one point living out of a Ford hatchback [2,4]. Despite these challenges, Ahrens became the first person in his family to attend college, earning an associate degree from De Anza College, a bachelor's degree in political science from UCLA, and a Master of Public Administration from San Jose State University [1,2,3]. His twin brother Sean later passed away from cancer, an experience that profoundly shaped Ahrens's commitment to expanding healthcare access for working families [4,6].
Ahrens launched his career in public service working for U.S. Representative Janice Hahn in Washington, D.C., where he met Evan Low [1,2]. He returned to Silicon Valley to serve as Low's district director for approximately a decade, building deep ties with the communities of Assembly District 26 [3,6]. In 2018, Ahrens was elected to the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees, where he quickly established himself as a champion of affordable housing and student support services [1,2]. He was re-elected without opposition in 2022 and was selected as president of the board in December 2021 [1,3].
His 17% CFC Biblical Values Scorecard rating reflects consistent divergence from the California Family Council's worldview framework. His voting record has supported abortion access expansion over the sanctity of life, government-directed education over parental authority, and progressive social mandates over religious liberty protections.
