Alex Lee (born July 11, 1995) is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly representing District 24, which encompasses the Alameda County communities of Fremont, Newark, and Sunol, as well as Milpitas and parts of San Jose in Santa Clara County [1][3]. First elected in 2020 at age 25, Lee made history as the youngest Asian American legislator ever elected in California and the state's first openly bisexual state legislator [1][2]. A self-described democratic socialist endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders [2][6], Lee chairs both the Assembly Human Services Committee and the Legislative Progressive Caucus [3][4]. He has built his legislative identity around proposals for a state wealth tax on the ultra-rich, government-built social housing, universal healthcare, and a ban on corporate campaign contributions [1][5]. The son of Hong Kong immigrants, Lee grew up in Milpitas, attended public schools, and graduated from the University of California, Davis, where he served as student body president [5][7]. The California Family Council's 2025 legislative scorecard placed Lee among a bloc of legislators scoring between 13% and 15%, reflecting consistent votes at odds with CFC's positions on life, family, and parental rights [8]. His 13% CFC Biblical Values Scorecard rating reflects consistent divergence from the California Family Council's worldview framework on the sanctity of life (Chapter 6), parental authority in education (Chapter 8), and religious liberty (Chapter 9).
Alex Lee's path to the California Assembly began in the working-class neighborhoods of Milpitas, where he was raised by immigrant parents from Hong Kong -- his father an engineer and his mother a nurse [2][5]. He attended Milpitas High School before enrolling at UC Davis, where he earned dual degrees in political science and communications in 2017 and served as student body president representing 30,000 students [1][5].
In 2020, Lee won his Assembly seat in a grassroots campaign that refused corporate donations, defeating a more established and better-funded opponent [5][6]. He was immediately notable as the chamber's youngest member and one of its most ideologically progressive. On his first day in office, he introduced legislation to ban corporate donations to political candidates [2].
Their 9.1% Biblical Values Scorecard rating across 104 scored floor votes reflects consistent divergence from CFC's worldview framework. Their voting record has supported abortion access expansion over the sanctity of human life, government-directed education over parental authority and school choice, and progressive social mandates over religious liberty protections.
Lee currently chairs the Assembly Human Services Committee and the Select Committee on Social Housing, and serves on the Budget, Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials, Housing and Community Development, and Labor and Employment committees [4]. He has been recognized as "Legislator of the Year" by both the Golden State Manufactured Home Owners League and the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, and received a "20 Under 40" Leadership Award from The Council of State Governments [7].
