State Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D., is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist and Democratic lawmaker representing California's 39th Senate District, which encompasses portions of central San Diego along with the communities of La Mesa, El Cajon, and Lemon Grove. [1] Born on July 2, 1978, and raised in San Diego's Oak Park neighborhood, she is the daughter of California Secretary of State Shirley Weber. [2] Weber Pierson earned her bachelor's degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and her medical degree from the University of Rochester Medical Center, completing her residency at Chicago's Cook County Hospital and a fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. [3] She founded the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Division at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. [3] Her political career began on the La Mesa City Council in 2018, where she became the first African American member in the city's history. [4] She won a 2021 special election to the Assembly and was elected to the Senate in November 2024, making her the first African American south of Los Angeles County to serve in the California State Senate. [1] With a 15% CFC Biblical Values Scorecard rating, Weber Pierson's legislative record has placed her in consistent opposition to the California Family Council's core priorities. As an OB-GYN who has built her legislative identity around expanding what she calls "abortion-related servicescare" — which CFC views as the expansion of abortion access — and who has authored legislation mandating abortion training in medical schools, [5] her policy agenda strikes at the heart of CFC's conviction that every human life possesses full moral worth from the moment of fertilization (Chapter 6). Her work in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, however, reflects a genuine commitment to the health and welfare of young women that CFC recognizes.
Akilah Faizah Weber Pierson's path to the California Senate is rooted in both a distinguished medical career and a family legacy of public service. After graduating from Encanto Elementary School and Gompers Secondary School in San Diego, she pursued higher education across the country, earning her B.S. in biology from Xavier University of Louisiana and her M.D. from the University of Rochester Medical Center [3].
Weber Pierson entered electoral politics in 2018, winning a seat on the La Mesa City Council and becoming the first African American to serve on that body [4]. During her time on the council, she championed the city's Climate Action Plan, helped create a Community Police Oversight Board, and established a homelessness task force [4].
Her 15.0% Biblical Values Scorecard rating across 30 scored floor votes reflects consistent divergence from CFC's worldview framework. Her voting record has supported abortion access expansion over the sanctity of human life, government-directed education over parental authority and school choice, and progressive social mandates over religious liberty protections.
On the issues central to CFC's worldview framework, Weber Pierson's record represents a deep and sustained divergence. Her professional identity as an OB-GYN and her legislative focus on expanding abortion access place her in direct opposition to CFC's foundational conviction that human life begins at fertilization and possesses full moral worth from that moment.
