Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins is a first-term Democratic Assemblymember representing the 79th Assembly District, which includes portions of southeastern San Diego, El Cajon, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, and the unincorporated communities of Bonita, La Presa, and Spring Valley [1,2]. A lifelong San Diego resident, single mother of two, and educator with a doctorate in educational leadership from San Diego State University, Sharp-Collins brings deep roots in community engagement and family advocacy to the Legislature [2,3]. While her policy priorities on abortion access and equity-focused governance diverge from CFC's positions, her emphasis on strengthening families, protecting children in the justice system, expanding early childhood education, and ensuring government accountability reflect concerns that resonate across ideological lines [4,5,6]. With a 15% CFC Biblical Values Scorecard rating, Sharp-Collins's voting record has consistently placed her at considerable distance from the California Family Council's worldview framework on the sanctity of life (Chapter 6), parental authority in education (Chapter 8), and religious liberty (Chapter 9).
LaShae Sharp-Collins was born and raised in San Diego, California, where she graduated from Lincoln High School before attending San Diego State University. At SDSU, she earned a bachelor's degree in Africana Studies, a master's degree in education with an emphasis in multicultural counseling, and ultimately a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, which she completed in 2023 [1,2,3].
Sharp-Collins built a distinguished career in education and public service before seeking elected office. She served for fifteen years as an adjunct professor in the Department of Africana Studies at San Diego State University and was a member of the California Faculty Association [1,2,8]. She then served for nine years as District Director for then-Assemblymember Dr. Shirley N.
Her 13.8% Biblical Values Scorecard rating across 29 scored floor votes reflects consistent divergence from CFC's worldview framework. Her voting record has supported abortion access expansion over the sanctity of human life, government-directed education over parental authority and school choice, and progressive social mandates over religious liberty protections.
In her first year, Sharp-Collins introduced her 'Working For Families Legislative Package,' which aims to combat affordability challenges for California residents. Key bills include AB 1324 (expanding CalWORKs eligibility to self-employed workers and those working over 100 hours), AB 1371 (protecting workers' right to refuse unsafe conditions), AB 1411 (voter education and outreach), and AB 1433 (funding for community college continuing education centers) [4,10].
