Mike Fong

Assemblymember Mike Fong is a Democrat representing California's 49th Assembly District, which encompasses the western San Gabriel Valley communities of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, South Pasadena, and Temple City ^[1,2]. A lifelong Los Angeles County resident born on February 29, 1976, Fong entered the Assembly through a February 2022 special election and currently chairs both the Assembly Higher Education Committee and the Asian American & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus ^[1,3]. Mike Fong (Chinese: Fang Shuqiang) grew up in Los Angeles County and attended Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School before enrolling at East Los Angeles College, beginning a lifelong connection to the community college system he would later help govern ^[2,4]. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology with a minor in Education from UCLA and a Master of Public Administration in Public Sector Management and Leadership from California State University, Northridge ^[1,2]. These educational experiences grounded his career-long commitment to expanding access to higher education, particularly for students from communities like those he grew up in across the San Gabriel Valley.

Fong's professional career in public service began with roles in Los Angeles city government. He served as a field deputy for Los Angeles Councilmember Ed Reyes and later as the East Area Director for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, positions that immersed him in the civic life of diverse LA neighborhoods ^[2,4]. He subsequently became the Director of Policy and Government Relations for the City of Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, where he led efforts to engage community members in local governance and decision-making ^[2]. This hands-on experience with constituent services and neighborhood-level advocacy would prove valuable preparation for his later legislative career.

On the issues central to the California Family Council's mission, Fong's voting record has consistently diverged from CFC's worldview framework.
