Michelle Rodriguez

Michelle Rodriguez is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly representing the 53rd District, which spans portions of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties including the Inland Empire communities of Ontario, Pomona, and Chino. ^[1,3] A lifelong resident of the district and a working-class mother of four, ^[2,5] Rodriguez built a career in healthcare administration and school security before her appointment to the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. ^[1,2] Elected in 2024 to succeed her husband, former Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez, ^[1,2] she was quickly named Assistant Majority Whip and has focused her early legislative agenda on reducing the cost of living, supporting public safety, and combating human trafficking, and extending safe surrender protections for vulnerable infants. ^[3,7] CFC has noted her authorship of AB 1628, which extends the time frame for safe baby surrender from 72 hours to 30 days — a life-affirming measure that provides mothers more time to consider alternatives to abandonment. Her personal story — raising four children who entered public service careers including law enforcement, firefighting, and healthcare — reflects the kind of family-centered life the California Family Council's framework seeks to protect. However, her 19% CFC Biblical Values Scorecard rating indicates that her voting record as a member of the Democratic caucus has diverged from CFC's core priorities on most family policy issues in the current session.

Rodriguez assumed office on December 2, 2024, after defeating Republican Nick Wilson in the general election for the open 53rd District seat. ^[1] She had advanced through a five-candidate primary alongside Wilson. ^[1] Upon taking office, she was named Assistant Majority Whip by the Assembly Democratic leadership. ^[3,4] She currently serves on the Banking and Finance, Governmental Organization, Insurance, Economic Development and Household Impact, Public Employment and Retirement, Revenue and Taxation, and Rules committees.

Born and raised in Ontario, California, Rodriguez earned a medical assistant certification from Northwest College and a campus security officer certificate from the Pomona Unified School District. ^[1,2] She worked in healthcare administration for Inter Valley Health Plan, a nonprofit Medicare Advantage organization, and for ProMed Healthcare Administrators, which manages care services.

Her 10.2% Biblical Values Scorecard rating across 59 scored floor votes reflects consistent divergence from CFC's worldview framework. Her voting record has supported abortion access expansion over the sanctity of human life, government-directed education over parental authority and school choice, and progressive social mandates over religious liberty protections.

While raising her four children in Pomona, Rodriguez was deeply involved in community service — leading a local Girl Scout troop, serving as athletic director for the Junior All-American Football League's Pomona Steelers, organizing a Neighborhood Watch program, and working with the young mothers' program at Valley View High School. ^[2,5] Her children have pursued careers in public service and healthcare, working as a deputy sheriff, retail store manager, EMT and firefighter, and respiratory therapist.
