For Use In: Sermons, Bible Studies, or Small Group Discussion

CFC Position: Oppose

Biblical Framing

God calls His people to love their neighbors and pursue justice — but He also calls us to hold governments accountable when they overstep their authority. As Proverbs 29:2 reminds us, "When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan."

Key Talking Points

This bill creates a two-tiered justice system. AB 2624 would allow workers at certain government-favored organizations to hide their identities and activities from public accountability — special legal protections unavailable to ordinary Californians.

It could shield wrongdoing from public view. When any organization — regardless of its mission — can operate behind a legal veil of secrecy, it becomes harder for communities, journalists, and even law enforcement to identify fraud or harm.

It restricts lawful free speech. The bill makes it a criminal offense — punishable by prison time — to share publicly available information about these workers online. That's a serious threat to the free speech God-given rights we depend on to keep government and powerful institutions accountable.

Transparency protects the vulnerable. Scripture calls us to "speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves" (Proverbs 31:8). Genuine protection of the vulnerable requires more transparency in institutions serving them, not less.

Broad laws like this are easily misused. Well-intentioned privacy protections can become tools to silence whistleblowers, journalists, or concerned citizens who identify genuine problems.

Churches depend on free speech too. Any legal framework that criminalizes the publication of truthful information about public-facing organizations sets a precedent that could one day be aimed at ministries and faith communities.

Relevant Scripture

Proverbs 29:2 — "When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan."
Proverbs 31:8-9 — "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly."
Isaiah 10:1-2 — "Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees... to turn aside the needy from justice."

How to Pray

For wisdom in Sacramento — Pray that legislators would pursue genuine justice and real transparency rather than political favoritism.
For protection of the vulnerable — Pray that those truly in danger would receive real protection, and that the law would not be used to shield wrongdoing.
For courage in the church — Pray that California's believers would remain engaged, informed, and unafraid to speak the truth in love on issues of public accountability.
For our pastors and leaders — Pray for discernment as they help their congregations navigate complex legislation that affects religious liberty and free speech.

Small Group Discussion Question

"How do we as Christians balance showing compassion toward those in need with holding institutions accountable for how they serve the vulnerable? Where does Scripture speak to both?"
