Pastor Talking Points: AB 2615 — Educational Equity: Discrimination

For use in sermons, Bible studies, or small group settings

Biblical Framing

God entrusts children first to parents, not to the state. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 calls us to teach our children diligently — and that means knowing what is actually being taught in their classrooms.

Key Talking Points

A bill moving through Sacramento would quietly remove a key protection that currently requires public school teachers to instruct from fact and professional responsibility — rather than personal opinion, advocacy, or bias.

Under current law, parents and school boards have a clear standard to point to if a teacher's instruction crosses the line. This bill would erase that standard and replace it with vague language about being "balanced and fair" — terms that sound good but are nearly impossible to enforce.

When guardrails are removed, children are the ones left unprotected. Proverbs 31:8 calls us to "speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves." Our children need adults who will do exactly that.

This isn't about attacking teachers. Most teachers are dedicated professionals. This is about ensuring that every classroom has a clear, enforceable standard — and that parents have real recourse when something goes wrong.

Matthew 18:6 reminds us that Jesus took the protection of children with absolute seriousness. So should we.

How to Pray

Pray for wisdom for California legislators — that they would write laws that genuinely protect children rather than open doors to ideological instruction.

Pray for parents in your congregation who are navigating public schools, that they would have discernment, courage, and open communication with their children.

Pray for teachers of faith serving in public schools, that they would be salt and light and that their integrity would be protected.

Pray that this bill would not advance, and that those in authority would hear from the families they serve.

Discussion Question for Small Groups

What does it look like for our church to practically support and equip parents who are trying to stay engaged in their children's education?

A Gentle Call to Action

If you feel led, take five minutes this week to contact your state Assembly member and let them know you support clear, enforceable standards for classroom instruction. You can find your representative at legislature.ca.gov. And encourage the parents in your life — they are not alone in this.
