AB 2242 — Pastor Talking Points

Pupil Safety: Sextortion Informational Poster

For use in sermons, Bible studies, or small group discussions

Pastoral Opening

As shepherds of our congregations, we are called to protect the vulnerable and speak truth about the dangers our children face. Proverbs 31:8-9 reminds us to "open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute… defend the rights of the poor and needy" — and today, our children need us to be informed and present.

What This Bill Does

AB 2242 would require California middle and high schools to post informational material warning students about sextortion — a growing form of online predation where young people are manipulated or threatened into sharing explicit images.

Talking Points

Sextortion is a real and rapidly growing danger. Predators target children as young as 12 through social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps — often right under parents' noses.

This bill is largely a protective measure. It asks schools to post awareness posters in restrooms and common areas so students know this threat exists and where to get help.

One note worth watching: the amended bill adds posting requirements in "all-gender restrooms" on school campuses — a quiet reminder that gender ideology continues to be woven into otherwise commonsense legislation.

Parents are still the first line of defense. No poster replaces the God-given responsibility described in Deuteronomy 6:7 — to speak to your children "when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way." Talk to your kids about online safety at home.

Scripture calls us to protect children from exploitation. Psalm 82:3-4 urges us to "give justice to the weak and the fatherless… rescue the weak and the needy."

The church has a role here. Awareness, discipleship, and honest conversation about digital dangers are part of faithful family ministry in the 21st century.

How to Pray

Pray for children in California who are already victims of sextortion and online exploitation — that they would find help, healing, and the love of God.
Pray for parents to be awakened to the digital dangers their children face and equipped to have courageous, honest conversations at home.
Pray for wisdom for legislators — that even well-intentioned bills would not carry harmful ideological additions through the process.
Pray for school administrators and counselors who work daily to protect students.

Discussion Question

For small groups: "What does it look like for our family — or our church — to be a safe place where children can bring their fears, mistakes, or experiences online without shame?"
