Health Care Coverage "Nondiscrimination" Bill

For use in sermons, Bible studies, or small group discussion

God created us in His image — male and female — and called that creation "very good" (Genesis 1:27). As the church, we are called to speak the truth in love, especially when the world redefines what it means to be human.

Key Points to Share:

A bill moving through Sacramento would redefine "sex discrimination" in health insurance law to include "gender identity" — meaning insurers could be required to cover puberty blockers, sterilizing hormone therapies, and surgeries that permanently alter healthy bodies, including the bodies of children.

This isn't just a policy debate. God knit each of us together in our mother's womb (Psalm 139:13-14). Procedures that permanently alter or damage healthy bodies — especially those of minors — contradict His design and calling for our lives.

Doctors, hospitals, and insurers who hold biblical convictions about the human body could face legal pressure to participate in these procedures or pay for them against their conscience.

Every family that carries health insurance in California could ultimately be affected, as coverage mandates shape what plans must include.

Proverbs 31:8-9 calls us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Children are not able to fully understand the permanent consequences of these decisions — and this bill moves in the wrong direction.

How to Pray:

Pray for wisdom for California legislators, that they would govern with truth and protect the vulnerable.
Pray for doctors, nurses, and health care workers who want to serve with integrity and without being forced to violate their conscience.
Pray for children and families navigating confusion about gender — that they would encounter the love and truth of Jesus Christ.
Pray for the church to be a voice of compassion and clarity in this cultural moment.

Discussion Question for Small Groups:

How can our church community come alongside families and medical professionals who are being pressured to accept ideas about the human body that conflict with biblical teaching — while still showing genuine love to those who are hurting?
