Pastor Talking Points: AB 1854
"When States Shield What God Calls Sacred"
For Use In: Sermons, Bible Studies, Small Group Discussion
Issue: California legislation that expands legal protections for abortion and gender transition procedures
Pastoral Opening
God calls us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8-9), and to love both truth and neighbor with courage. A bill moving through Sacramento right now asks us to do exactly that — because it touches the sanctity of human life and the wellbeing of children.
Talking Points
●
California is considering a law that would shield medical providers who perform abortions and gender transition procedures — not just here in California, but potentially in other states where those actions may be against the law.
●
This bill makes it harder for other states to hold providers accountable — even when those providers may be harming vulnerable women, girls, or children far from California's borders.
●
Scripture reminds us that every life is knit together by God in the womb (Psalm 139:13-14). Laws that protect the ending of that life — and make accountability nearly impossible — grieve the heart of God.
●
This isn't just a political issue. It's a question of whether our state will stand for the protection of the vulnerable or become a refuge for those who harm them.
●
God-given parental authority over children's medical decisions is sacred. When the state works to shield procedures that can permanently alter a child's body from any outside accountability, families everywhere should pay attention.
●
The church has always been called to stand in the gap for the vulnerable. That calling doesn't stop at the steps of the Capitol.
Scripture References
●
Psalm 139:13-14 — "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
●
Proverbs 31:8-9 — "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the poor and needy."
●
Proverbs 24:11-12 — "Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter."
How to Pray
●
Pray for wisdom and courage for California legislators — that God would stir hearts to protect the vulnerable, not shield those who harm them.
●
Pray for the unborn children and struggling young people whose lives are touched by these decisions, that God would surround them with truth and protection.
●
Pray for California's pastors and churches — that we would not be silent when the sanctity of life and the innocence of children are at stake.
●
Pray for California Family Council and other advocates standing in the gap in Sacramento, that God would give them open doors and clear voices.
Small Group Discussion Question
Read Proverbs 24:11-12 together. In what practical ways is God calling our church — not just our government — to "rescue those being taken away"? How does our faith community respond when laws make that harder to do?
