Pastor Talking Points: AB 1578 — "Anti-Hate Speech" Training for Elected Officials
For use in sermons, Bible studies, or small group discussions
Biblical Foundation
God calls His people to speak truth — and to protect the freedom of those who do. When government gains the power to label certain beliefs as "hate," the voices of pastors, parents, and people of faith are never far behind on the list.
Key Talking Points
●
California lawmakers want to require every elected official — from state legislators to local school board members — to complete mandatory "anti-hate speech" training. That sounds reasonable until you realize the bill never defines what "hate speech" actually means.
●
When the government gets to decide what words are "hateful" without any clear definition, that power can be turned against anyone who holds traditional or biblical beliefs — about marriage, about gender, about human life.
●
Elected officials who listen to their constituents — including faithful Christians — could be pressured to think twice before speaking, knowing their words might be measured against a vague, government-approved standard.
●
Proverbs 31:8-9 calls us to "open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute... defend the rights of the poor and needy." We defend free speech not just for ourselves, but for those whose voices are most vulnerable.
●
Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). Biblical truth is not hate — and no government training program should have the power to say otherwise.
●
The Apostles were told to stop speaking in Jesus' name, and they answered, "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29). That same conviction belongs in our public square today.
How to Pray
●
Pray for wisdom for Christian elected officials who will be subject to this training — that they would hold fast to biblical convictions without fear.
●
Pray for discernment in Sacramento — that legislators would recognize the danger of giving government undefined power over speech and belief.
●
Pray for the church to remain a place where God's truth is spoken clearly and freely, and that our voice in the culture would never be silenced by intimidation or vague law.
Discussion Question
If a government training told an elected official that calling marriage the union of a man and woman was "hate speech," how should that official respond? How should the church support men and women like that in public office?
